Abstract
Centella asiatica (C. asiatica) is currently widely used in wound healing and has recently been reported to haveimmune suppressive properties. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory and allergic disease. We hereininvestigated the anti-atopic effect of C. asiatica in vivo. To examine the anti-atopic dermatitis activity of C. asiatica theovalbumin-induced BALB/c mouse model was used. Ovalbumin mixture was injected into the abdominal cavity andpatched on the back to induce AD, and then treated by orally administering C. asiatica. C. asiatica reduced major signsof clinical skin severity such as erythema, pruritus, lichenification, edema/escoriations, and dryness. A decrease in thenumber of scratch was also seen in scratching counts. The level of serum IgE was also reduced in mice treated with C.
asiatica. We therefore suggested C. asiatica extract can be used as a therapeutic agent for AD treatment.
